Welcome.
Why, you may ask, is the mouthy Mr. Bokkon generating yet another venue for his unwanted flood of opinion and invective? I can answer this query in a few words.
I've been reading Lizzie Skurnick's Shelf Discovery: The Teen Classics We Never Stopped Reading. Briefly, it's a look at books that the girls (and in some cases the boys) of Gens X and Y read during those unfortunate "formative years". She covers all the bases, too, from Little House in the Big Woods to Flowers in the Attic. She celebrates the best (the review of A Wrinkle In Time is especially good) and skewers a few (Go Ask Alice is given the drubbing it deserves).
It's great. But as a member of the other gender, I'm not in the book's target audience, even if I have read a good number of the works she cites. This made me conscious of my own experiences with literature in the dread days of Reagan and Bush Sr., all the way through my Kurt-Cobain-haircut-and-purple-jeans phase of the early Clinton years. And so, dear readers, I present to you DORKBOY: wherein you will find literary ruminations past and present, That Was Then, This is Now (which I found very affecting at the time, and now hate with a consuming passion) to Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (one of the three books I'm currently reading).
Please, feel free to comment on these posts, especially if you've read the works in question. Look for a proper first post later today!
